This is Liz Arnold’s bright idea for Cork.

To develop a sensory garden for children in a RAPID and DEIS area.

The children will benefit greatly from a sensory garden, it can help develop a child’s sense of smell, taste and touch and these aspects of learning are just as important as learning to read or write.

It will encourage them to be creative and imaginative and help develop positive lifestyles. Outdoor play encourages children to be relaxed and calm and also outdoor play has been proven to help children heal from stress and trauma.

We will deliver it by defining different areas in the outdoors such as mud kitchen, digging and planting areas. The Churchfield Community Trust do this type of work for the outdoors. We would arrange for them to revamp this outdoor area for us to a sensory garden.

We are a community creche in a RAPID and DEIS area and we are a full time creche catering for 22 children every day. We go out door everyday and the children have very little to stimulate them. We cannot purchase suitable equipment as we have no budget for this.

The money will be spent to purchase a mud kitchen and have it assembled, planter boxes for herbs, plants and digging. Sensory areas on walls for touch and feel such as blocks and mirrors.
