WHY VOTE FOR US
By creating the opportunity to play basketball the fitness level of women has improved and they get an opportunity to participate in sport with women living in the wider community.
Women take regular exercise as a result of being involved in basketball and the opportunity to join in an activity which includes women in the community has been both enjoyable and a normalising experience.
By providing a coaching course for the ladies to empower the participants from both direct provision and the wider community to come together in a unique, safe and egalitarian environment to break down “suspicions” and obstacles to interculturalism.
We will hire the Gym from the Titans Basketball Club from September 2016 – June 2017; hire a coach; recruit Volunteers to provide transport from direct provision centre to club and back; provide a support worker to register the players and provide team support.
It is widely documented that residents living in direct provision centres experience isolation, poverty and social exclusion. They often spend years in a limbo situation uncertain about their futures and with very limited financial resources.
The opportunity to connect in a meaningful way in the community is limited. Access to and participation in sports for women is one area where people rarely get the opportunity to engage and yet the benefits are well recognised. This project offers a unique opportunity for this.
